Types of IV Catheters

• Central – Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC): Inserted into the elbow vein like a midline catheter but is threaded up into the vena cava, leading to the heart.
• Central – Tunneled Central Venous Catheter: Surgically inserted through subcutaneous tissue leading to an exit site located on the chest or abdominal wall. The tip of the catheter rests in the vena cava.
• Central – Percutaneous Non-Tunneled Catheter: Percutaneously inserted through the jugular, subclavian or femoral vein.
• Central – Implanted Port: An implanted reservoir, attached to a catheter, is placed in the chest or arm of the patient. Tip of this IV catheter positions in the central vasculature.
