When to use Freedom Cath Male External Catheter?
How to use Freedom Condom Catheter?
1. Select the proper size of the external catheter by using the Medical sizing guide. Place the sizing guide across the shaft of penis to find the appropriate size. For comfort and effectiveness, choose the size closest to the width of penis. |
2. Things the user need to have include the condom catheter, a collection bag with connecting tube, non-pointed manicure scissors, soap (avoid using soaps that leave a cream or residue on the skin), washcloth and towel. |
3. Do remember to wash hands before beginning to reduce the risk of infections. Trim hairs on the shaft and base of penis, and any other pubic hair that might interfere with the adhesive on the coloplast condom catheter |
4. In order for the catheter adhesive to perform properly, the skin must be clean and very dry. Before application wash penis with mild soap and warm water. Make sure that the area is completely dry before proceeding. |
5. Place the rolled self-adhering catheter over the penile tip. Unroll the catheter slowly and carefully, leaving just enough space in the funnel end so the tip of penis does not rub against the inside of the funnel. If uncircumcised, be sure to leave the foreskin in place over the head of the penis |
6. Smoothen any wrinkles in the catheter. Gently squeeze the catheter to properly to seal it to the skin. Wear time may be significantly reduced if the adhesive is not properly sealed. Note: |
7. Strap the urine collection bag to thigh or calf, depending on activities and clothing. Connect one end of the tubing to the catheter and cut the tubing to a comfortable length. The tubing should not exert unnecessary pressure on the catheter. Connect the cut end to the leg bag. |
8. Wear time will vary from user to user. For proper hygiene it is recommended that a male external catheter be changed every 24 hours. |
How To remove Freedom Male External Catheter?
1. Clamp the connecting tube closed before removing the leg bag. Release the leg straps and disconnect the tubing at the top of the bag. Gently roll the external catheter forward and off the penis. To help loosen the adhesive prior to removal, apply a warm wet compress (such as a wet washcloth) around the coloplast condom catheter. |
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How long can you wear a male external catheter?
Most external catheters are designed to stay on for 24 hours, but only if the skin is well cared for. Do not apply to the skin that is inflamed, macerated, or has sores. The skin on the penis must be healthy to use external catheters.
2. How do you measure for a condom catheter?
Measure the circumference of the penis and then divide the result by 3.14. Eg: 12cm / 3.14 = 3.8cm (38mm). If you still have doubts, we recommend you order the smaller size.
3. How is a condom catheter different from an indwelling catheter?
The use of condom catheters is less likely to lead to bacteriuria, symptomatic UTI, or death than the use of indwelling catheters. This protection is especially apparent in men without dementia.
4. How does Freedom catheter help in emptying the bladder?
This device looks like a typical condom with a tube that is connected to a urinary drainage bag and worn over the penis. It is only used for males.
